LOCAL: Location contexts for location-aware applications

The aim of the Local project was to contribute to the specification of a framework to support the development of location-aware applications for mobile and ubiquitous systems. The main objective of this project was to develop a Context Management system, specialized for location-context information, that builds a representation of the context of a person and provides it to external applications.

To build the context of a mobile object, the project explored the following concepts: i) the context can be enhanced with high-level context information by calculating and estimating new context dimensions from the location data collected directly from sensors; ii) the situation of the mobile object can be enhanced through correlation of geographic information with location data collected from sensors.

This project was funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia through grant (POSI/CHS/44971/2002) with support from the POSI programme.

This project ran from February 2004 to June 2006.
